A less common 12 bar blues variation is shown in the following example. This is similar to the classic blues-based song ‘Alberta’. Notice how we’re using the V chord in bar 2. This example also uses a common I-IV-I-V turnaround in bars 11-12.

Hopefully you can see how the basic 12 bar blues format can be slightly changed to give a few possible variations. Listen to and play these examples, and you’ll get to the stage where you can detect which version of the 12 bar blues is being used. You’ll also be able to spot 12 bar blues forms when you see them written out as chord sequences in your uke songbook.
